Job: Software Developer, Lang Appl
Location: USA
Timescale: Starts now, full time
Computer software alone does not make a good Bible translation, but software can make huge contributions, increasing the speed and efficiency and decreasing the costs. We'll always need linguists but we also need people with a love of computer languages. As a Language Applications Programmer you'd be writing new applications, and porting existing ones, on Linux and Mac OS X platforms. These will be specialized, innovative tools for use by translators and linguists in the field, and distributed on CD-ROM as shrink-wrap software. Most work is done in C++ and/or C#, although Perl, Python, XSLT and SQL are also used. Prior experience of either Linux or Mac OS is essential, and skills in a strongly-typed object-oriented programming language such as C++, C#, or Java are very important. Familiarity with a variety of open-source packages, especially databases, would be helpful. When churches think of mission they don't often think of supporting a computer programmer, but once God has convinced you of the value of this work then he can convince others too. This is a field in which your computer skills can make not just a global impact but an eternal one.
This position is not salaried.
