Job: Linguistic/Translation Worker (initial)
Location: Vanuatu
Timescale: Starts 01 Jan 2011, full time
Interested in having a part in seeing God’s Word in the hands of people in their own language? Vanuatu, an island nation with a population of only 200,000 is home to over 100 distinct language groups. Translation done by early missionaries to the country has fallen into disuse – time has changed the languages so that old translations are very hard to make sense of. Modern translation efforts over the past 25 years have produced two New Testaments in up to date language. Another 14 Bible translation programs are in progress, BUT that leaves 50 to 60 language groups without one word of Scripture in their language! The languages present quite a challenge – most of them have 500 speakers or less, but in–country linguists agree that they are hardy and viable. Will you accept the challenge to serve the people of Vanuatu so they can benefit from God’s Word in the language of their heart? Our current strategy is is a one language team to one language approach. Given the constraints of small population, education and literacy it will be our base approach into the future. Prioritisation and assignment is made in conjunction with our partners (the Christian Council and local translation organization VBT). Future strategy may place translation personnel in clusters to maximize the future potential of translation projects started. These could conceivably become multi-language projects or be the focus of an adaptation approach as the ‘central’ language comes to completion. We need well trained people with a clear sense of God’s calling who will dedicate their time (probably at least 10 years), their skills and their hearts to seeing the people of Vanuatu have access to His Word. We need people who are flexible, spiritually hardy, motivated, resourceful and can work together as a team to get the task done. Could that be you? Join us in our mission to help all who hunger for God’s Word.
This position is not salaried.
