Job: Linguist/Translator (Initial) - Kapin
Location: Papua New Guinea
Timescale: Starts 01 Dec 2010, full time
Interested in having a part in seeing God’s Word in the hands of people in their own language? Papua New Guinea is home to hundreds of distinct language groups. More than 160 of those language groups now have the New Testament because of translators who have dedicated their lives to the task, 180 more Bible translation programs are in progress, BUT more than 300 language groups still do not have one word of Scripture in their language! Where are all these language groups? In coastal areas, remote mountain villages, and outlying island settings. A range of approaches have been identified to tackle this mammoth task from directed programs in remote areas with very low educational levels to consultative programs in better educated urban areas and a variety of multi-language approaches. The rugged mountains of Morobe Province are home to the Kapin people. The translators who allocated there had to leave the project in the 80’s, but the Kapin people have not given up on their goal to have the Scriptures in their own language. A team of dedicated translators continue with the project; they are looking for a mentor but would not require the full time attention of a translation team. A translator working with the Kapin could later begin a cluster project, working with up to six neighbouring language groups, serving over 10,000 people. We need well trained people with a clear sense of God’s calling who will dedicate their time, their skills and their hearts to seeing the people of PNG have access to His Word. We need people who are flexible, spiritually hardy, motivated, resourceful and can work together as a cross-cultural team of PNG and expatriate co-workers to move ahead in the task of Bible translation. Will you accept the challenge to serve the people of PNG so they can benefit from God’s Word in the language of their heart? Join us in our mission to help all who hunger for God’s Word.
This position is not salaried.
